DESTMA Dangers
Today The Pond News witnessed overreaching attitude of DESTMA officials in Asaba, the state capital very close to St. Patrick College.
People who are statutorily charged with traffic flow in the state capital were searching the bags and pockets of young men and women.
Government should call them to order.
What has searching of people’s bags and pockets got to do with traffic control .
Even worse are the DESTMA crew close to the State House of Assembly.
They set traps for motorists and they collect as much as fifty thousand Naira with no receipt to show for it.
Within the week, officials of DESTIMA caused major traffic crashes in Warri.
There is nothing wrong getting a body to ease the flow of traffic.
But the Okowa police apart from extorting money from motorists pose great dangers to the motoring public.
The Ministry of Transport or whatever agency of government must control the danger and menace that is DESTMA.

Insecurity

Reports reaching The Pond News say that a young man was kidnapped in Okotomi Okpanam in the presence of his wife within the week.
The kidnappers are already demanding for millions of Naira from the relatives.
There was similar unfortunate kidnapping of people between Ubulu Uku and Agbor.
It is very sad and unfortunate.
In the two incidents, Fulani herders are fingered.
Yet there is a law against open grazing and the state legislators are pretending that things are alright security wise in the state.
There is a new Police Commissioner in the state.
Apart from the security briefing that would be given to him, let’s remind him kidnapping linked to Fulani herdsmen are the clear and present dangers.
The police boss should work with the heads of sister security agencies to combat the menace of kidnapping.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has done enough in terms of equipment and logistics for the police.
We don’t need President Donald John Trump to fight kidnapping in the state.

Christmas Rice and Politicians

One unique but dubious distinction of politicians is to give rice and money to their constituents .
It is a way of appreciating them for their support and loyalty.
Nothing is wrong with that.
But what is certainly wrong is the publicity given to such events.
You don’t embark on charity and carry the camera along.
It is no longer charity but a display of how wealthy you are.
You are trying to tell people that you have arrived and that you are their benefactors.
This is wrong because you are using public money to pretend to be a philanthropist.
The worse aspect of this kind of donation is that it does not address the needs of the people.
Empower the people with skills, establish cottage industry so that the people can fend for themselves, not the handouts that come in the name of Christmas Rice .
Remember the Chinese proverb.
Teach a man how to fish rather than give him fish to eat.
The truth of the matter is that our politicians are very insensitive and far from the vibrations of the electorate.
