Dr Juliet Ataine, wife to the Head of Legal Department in Uvwie Local Government Area, has suggested divorce to be an option in marriages.
Ataine made this assertion at the concluded Mothers’ Union Week, held today, Sunday 25th September, at St Stephens Anglican Church, Jakpa Road, Effurun.
Ataine who was among three other discussants that spoke on the topic, “Is divorce an option in a Christian marriage?” asserted: “When marriages becomes toxic, especially when the mental health and life of either partner is threaten, it becomes necessary to file for a divorce.”
In agreement with Ataine, Mrs Julie Emelue, a legal practitioner who was among the discussants, gave reasons that can enable divorce.
Emelue, who viewed the topic from the perspective of the law, explained that marriage can be dissolved based on the ground of incest, bestiality, homosexuality incompatibility, among others.
Mrs Achije Bessy, who spoke against divorce, explained that divorce was against God’s will for marriage.
“We must be patient and prayerful whenever issues that leads to divorce arises,” she stated.
Mrs Obriki, who supported the assertion of Mrs Achije, encouraged women not to yield to the idea of divorce, adding: “Our husband are our glory and shield. We must be committed in keeping our home as divorce is of the devil.”
