We’ll salvage Delta PDP – party bigwigs

Following the collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State after the shock defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the entire state party structure, the South South Zonal Caretaker Committee Chairman, Elder Emma Ogidi, has been directed to take charge of the party’s affairs in the state.

This interim measure is to remain in place pending the constitution of a full caretaker committee.

The directive was issued by the Acting National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Umar Damagum, at the end of the first National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held after the mass defection.

In response to the political shake-up in Delta, the party also revealed it has mandated its National Legal Adviser to approach the courts and “do the needful” in order to assert the PDP’s legal standing and recover party assets.

Speaking to the press shortly after the meeting, Elder Ogidi stated that he was ready to work with all remaining loyal stakeholders in the state to rebuild the PDP and reposition it for future electoral contests.

He described the current situation as unfortunate but not insurmountable.

The Acting National Chairman noted that the NWC carefully reviewed developments in Delta State and resolved that the zonal leadership must immediately relocate to the state.

Their mission, he said, includes taking stock of the party’s inventory and laying the groundwork for recovery and reorganization.

Damagum also confirmed that the NWC deliberated on the recommendations of the PDP Governors Forum regarding the position of the National Secretary.

While acknowledging the governors’ input, he stated that the matter will ultimately be decided by the National Executive Committee (NEC), in line with the party’s constitution.

The developments mark a decisive phase in the PDP’s effort to stabilize its internal structures and reassert its presence in one of its former strongholds.
