Anambra State is grappling with a disturbing rise in defilement cases, as two men have recently been remanded in custody on separate charges of child sexual abuse.
A 65-year-old man, Joseph Nwankwo, was remanded at the Awka Correctional facility after being charged with defiling an eight-year-old girl in Ekwulobia on December 28, 2024.
The girl’s mother reported the incident following complaints of waist pain and a subsequent medical examination confirming the assault.
Nwankwo pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned until March 12 for a DPP report.
Separately, 26-year-old bricklayer Samuel Atisi was remanded for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl in Nibo sometime in November 2024, resulting in a pregnancy.
Atisi, who also pleaded not guilty, will reappear in court on March 19 for DPP advice and his case was reported to the Police on February 8th.
Both men face charges under Section 130(2)(a)(b) of the Administration Criminal Justice Law 2022. The increasing number of such cases highlights a growing concern within the State.
