How not to implement anti-grazing law
Amidst escalating herders menace sweeping across Delta State, the government is contemplating recruiting 120 state livestock management officers to tackle herder and farmer clashes.
The State Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources ,Mr Val Arenyeka disclosed this yesterday while speaking to reporters in Asaba.
Said the Commissioner : As a state, we initially recruited 50 SLMOs and are now engaging an additional 70 officers to monitor farming activities across the 25 local government areas.
I believe those involved in the herder/farmer crises are criminal elements pretending to be herders, and it is up to the Federal Government to tackle these challenges.’
The admission of the Commissioner that some of the herders were criminals removed the shine of the work the 120 state livestock management officers.
The Pond News understands that there is a law against open grazing in Delta State and the government is pretending that everything is alright.
What can 120 unarmed officials do in 25 local government areas to tame the herders/farmers clashes.
This is a clear display of drought of ideas.
The law on open grazing should be implemented.
The executive and legislative arms should strategize on how to end the menace of herders in the state.
This recruitment of 120 officials to tackle herder farmer clashes is a wrong approach to a serious security issue.
