Peaceful protesters from Odokun Community, Benin River, in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, have taken over Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) Olero Flow Atation to drive home their demands.

The protesters, made up of men and women, were seen carrying placards with different inscriptions, chanting, ” we are hungry and suffering, Chevron.”

Their demands ranging from give us portable water supply, employ our children who are graduates, we need electricity supply, provide health care facilities, review scholarships, review of community workers salary, empowerment and provision of technical education, have remained a constant plea by the community to CNL to improve on their corporate social responsibility to their host communities.

Commenting on the issue, the Commanding officer, 90 Amphibious Battalion,Koko, Major Joshua Ajongbo, said the ongoing protest at the Olero field was not timely because of the Eld el Kabir celebrations.

He maintained that the protesters should have driven home their demands when the management of CNL was on ground to dialogue with them.

“The protesters would have no choice to call off the protest since they cannot be at the flow station through out this period of the Salah celebrations. I have however deployed soldiers there to forestall any breach of law and order,” he said.

It would be recalled that representatives from the communities at Olero, Dibi, and Abitaye flow stations had earlier met in Gbokoda Community to find ways of meeting with CNL to alleviate the sufferings of their people.

As at the time of filing this report management of CNL where not available for comment.
