A Reverend father with St. Jude Catholic Church, Effurun Rev. Father Mark Ikeke has said that Senator Ovie Omo Agege, the APC governorship candidate is a faithful Catholic and a communicant ( person that receives holy communion).
In a statement issued on 11th March 2023, the man of God stated that Senator Ovie Omo Agege is a baptized member of the Catholic faith.
Father Mark Ikeke observed in the statement that in an election year, a lot of lies and propaganda are used to deceive the voters.
He urged politicians to be civil in their campaigns.
The Rev Father maintained that the essence of the statement is to uphold the truth about the religious belief of the APC governorship candidate.
Part of the statement reads:’Our attention has been drawn to a claim or rumour that one of our parishioners, Senator Ovie Omo Agege, the deputy president of the Senate is not a Christian.
For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Ovie Omo Agege is a baptized, practising and dedicated member of the Roman Catholic Church. He is a member and communicant of St. Jude Catholic Church, Effurun, in Uvwie LGA.
The sole purpose of this information is to encourage decorum and also uphold the truth regarding the senator’s religious identity.’
The Pond News understands that some Governorship candidates have been spreading the rumour that Omo Agege was a member of Igbe (African Traditional religion) and should not be voted for by Christians.
One political party has named itself Church party in obvious mockery of the supposed religious belief of Omo Agege.
It is hoped with this information coming from St. Jude Catholic Church, Effurun, the matter will be laid to rest.
It is , however, curious the way politicians exploit religion to gain undue advantage even though the Nigerian constitution guarantees freedom of religion.
It is also noteworthy to observe that Nigeria is a secular state.
