The presidential candidate of the Labour Party Mr Peter Obi today celebrated Prof Saheed Aderinto for winning an international prize in history.
Obi stated that while he was thrilled by the achievements of Aderinto, he hoped that would make Nigerians appreciate more the value of history as a subject and help sharpen Nigerians view of a better tomorrow.
Obi paid tribute to Aderinto, a Prof of History and African Diaspora Studies at Florida International University for winning the $300,000 Dan David Prize
The former Anambra state governor observed that it was the first time a Nigerian was getting such an international award in history.
He said the award has placed Nigeria on the global map.
Obi shared these sentiments today via his verified Twitter account.
He argued that as a firm promoter of education for societal development, the award could not have come at a better time.
Obi tweeted thus:”Today, I celebrate and felicitate with our Nigerian born Prof Saheed Aderinto, a Prof of History and African Diaspora studies at Florida International University, who recently won the $300,000 Dan David Prize – the largest history prize in the world.
Prof Aderinto is the first and only Nigerian to have been awarded such prestigious prize in recognition of his outstanding scholarship in the very important field of history.
Beyond his financial reward, I am particularly thrilled by the achievements of intellectual giants like him who place Nigeria on the global map. As a firm promoter of education for societal development, I hope that his scholarly works will deepen our understanding of history and help sharpen our views for a better tomorrow”.
