Why Lagos monarch is angry
The Oba of Lagos ,Oba Rilwan Akiolu and some movie producers are currently beating the drums of war.
The cause of spate is the movie titled ‘Gangs of Lagos.
The Lagos monarch said the movie was defamatory, sacrilegious and was painting the famous Eyo masquerades as criminals.
The royal father therefore demanded an apology from the movie producers to the Oba of Lagos and indigenous people of Lagos.
The traditional ruler wrote the producer of the film, Amazon Prime Nigeria and Greoh LTD on the harmful effects of the film to the cultural identity of Lagos.
He warned the movie producers:’to immediately remove, cease and desist from using the image getup and manifestation of the Eyo in the Gangs of Lagos’…. provide within 14 days a compensatory proposal for the infringement of our intellectual property rights in our cultural heritage which you have commercially exploited with license.’
The copy of protest letter by Akiolu was also sent to Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu, with the Oba claiming the misrepresentation of the Eyo by the movie had caused great reputational damage to the Eyo brand and the people of Lagos State.
The Pond News understands that following the massive defeat of the APC in the presidential election by Labour Party, some Lagos Indigenes invoked the Eyo masquerades and other dieities on non Lagosians especially the Igbos.
These traditional tools were used to frighten the Igbos before the governorship elections.
The movie though an art work has serious political undertone.
