The hope of Nigerians especially civil servants of buying cheap rice has dimmed because the Tinubu administration has refused to keep its promise.
When the EndBadGovernance protest aka hunger protest began on August 1, the government promised to sell subsidized rice to civil servants
However , a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter Governmental Affairs said that proposal was no longer possible.
The circular dated 2nd August and signed by Aderoke Joiyesimi, director, Human Resources Management on behalf of the permanent secretary said that civil servants shall be notified if there was any change in policy.
The circular titled Withdrawal of Internal Circular of Sale of Subsidized Rice’ reads thus ‘I am directed to refer to our internal circular in the Ministry (Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter Governmental Affairs) of 1st August, 2024 on the above subject matter and inform you that the internal circular is hereby withdrawn.
Further details will be communicated in due course.’
This would be a rude shock to civil servants who were hoping to get cheaper rice.
The Pond News understands that the price of rice which is a staple food in Nigeria has skyrocketed.
A 50k bag of rice is between 70 thousand Naira and 90 thousand Naira depending on the location.
Most of the protesters are hungry and there are viral videos of people looting bags of rice and other food items.
