The State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ameliorate the plight of dependents of fallen heroes of the armed forces and Legionnaires.
The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori stated this on Tuesday at the launch of the emblem appeal fund of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu said the annual armed forces remembrance day, affords opportunity not only to remember fallen heroes of the armed forces but to find renewed ways to care for the dependents of those who had put their lives on the line to ensure the security, progress and unity of the country.
The governor who saluted the courage of the Nigerian military, enjoined the Local Government Council Chairmen to identify with the veterans and the fallen heros in their various Councils by ensuring that the emblem appeal fund is launched in their respective domains, stating that his administration is determined to do more to ensure that it brings smiles to the faces of widows and dependents of the fallen heroes.
The governor noted that the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund is one of the numerous ways through which the State Government appreciates the sacrifices and commitment of gallant heroes and veterans in ensuring that the country is united and safe.
Oborevwori promised to look into the Nigeria Legion request for farm land for agricultural ventures and admonished them to judiciously use the fund from the emblem launch for the the benefit of the veterans, their widows and the dependents of the fallen heroes.
Earlier, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Rtd. Col. Boniface Ojei thanked the State Government for hosting the annual event to raise funds to support the Nigeria Legion.
He appealed to government to provide recreational facilities at the State headquarters and Council Areas for the Legionnaires and a provision of bus for them for field activities.
In his remark, the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, HRM Major-General Felix Mujakperuo (rtd), Orhue 1 who also is the Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council, called on the State Government to make the day more memorable by ensuring that the private sector is also carried along in the emblem appeal fund launch.
The event was attended by top government functionaries who pledged support to the Nigeria legion through voluntary donations.
