Federal university where lecturers are more than students – Education Minister

Nigeria is now a laughing stock in university education ,the world over because of a federal university where there are more lecturers than students.

The Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa broke the news today after the federal executive council meeting in Abuja.

Said the Minister :’ Several federal universities operate far below capacity, with some having fewer than 2,000 students. In one northern university, there are 1,200 staff serving fewer than 800 students. This is a waste of government resources.’

The Education Minister did not mention the university but acknowledged that it was waste of resources.

The Pond News understands that this disclosure is an affirmation that the Tinubu administration is pouring the nation resources down the drain in the name of establishing federal university in every state.

Alausa also lamented that 199 universities got less than 100 applications through JAMB last year with 34 getting zero applications.

He regretted that fewer candidates were applying for polytechnic and colleges of education, adding that 64 colleges of education nationwide got no applications.

Based on these discouraging figures and data, the government has placed ban on the creation of new tertiary institutions for the next seven years.

He maintained that the issues of the nation tertiary institutions was more of inefficient duplication, poor infrastructure and dwindling enrollment.

The Pond News understands that there are 72 federal universities, 42 federal polytechnics and 28 federal colleges of education.

There are also hundreds of state owned and private tertiary institutions.
