ECOWAS set to attack Niger

The members of the Economic Community of West African States have placed their armies on red alert on possible attack on Niger Republic.

This was the resolution of ECOWAS members meeting in Abuja today.

The President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray made the declaration of war while reading the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup at the ECOWAS extraordinary meeting in Abuja.

The regional body appealed to the African Union, partner countries and institutions to support the military option.

ECOWAS argued that all efforts to convince the military junta to restore constitutional order and release former President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members fell on deaf ears.

The resolution reads thus :’Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS stand by force with all its elements immediately.

Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.’

The Pond News understands that Niger is the largest country in Africa with lot of uranium deposit.

The international dimension is because of the precious minerals.

Already there are Russian mercenaries in Niger and the military junta has suspended the military pact with France.

The United States and United Kingdom may not want a war of proxy because of the Ukraine conflict.

Nigeria already has its plate full because of insurgents in the north, kidnapping and armed banditry all over the country.

Many prominent Nigerians and institutions including Nigerian Guild of Editors have warned against military intervention in Niger.

The ruling junta in Niger had vowed to defend their country.
