The Delta State Government has assured Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in the various camps across the state of its commitment to their welfare during their stay in the camps.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, gave the assurance during the stakeholders’ summit on the 2023 population and housing census in Asaba.
Chief Ukah stated that the government has set up 3 camps in Asaba, one each in Ashaka and Utagba-Ogbe, 2 in Oleh, one in Patani and one between Patani and Uvwheru communities.
He said this is to ensure that people in the affected communities could relocate to the camps close to them.
The SSG appealed to persons that are still remaining in the flooded communities to relocate immediately to the camps close to them as their lives was more important than material things.
Earlier, Chief Ukah had inspected Ogbe-Afor Primary School camp in Asaba to ascertain the living conditions of the IDP’s in the camps.
The SSG, who was accompanied on the visit by the Commissioner, Bureau for Special Duties, Mr. Johnbull Edema, directed the Camp Commandant to ensure that he provided more mattresses for the IDP’s as their numbers were increasing.
He equally directed the him to ensure that the camp is well illuminated with more lights to aid the security men when they are on patrol.
The SSG, who interacted with some of the IDPs, told them not to loose hope as what they were going through was a phase which will end soon.
