Delta to earn more money from coconut than crude oil
The Delta state government in the nearest future shall earn more revenue from coconut plantations than the proceeds from crude oil.
This was the projection of Hon Aneke Ifemeni, the programme coordinator of Delta State Coconut Development Programme while speaking to reporters in Asaba recently.
Ifemeni stated that a litre of coconut oil sells for nine thousand naira whereas a litre of refined petrol is less than two hundred naira.
He therefore called on Deltans to embrace the coconut revolution, adding that his office was ready to partner with Deltans, communities and investors that were ready to invest in coconut cultivation.
Ifemeni who is also senior special assistant to the Governor on Agriculture disclosed the programme had acquired forty hectares of coconut plantations across the state.
He also said that about twenty thousand coconut seedlings have been distributed to willing coconut farmers in Delta North senatorial districts, adding that some farmers from Delta Central and Delta South senatorial districts shall soon benefit from the same gesture.
Ifemeni thanked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for establishing the programme as a practical step in diversifying the state economy and tackling unemployment among the youths.
