Police extortion and tinted glasses
The police in the state have acquired a unique but dubious distinction of fleecing the citizens of their hard earned money.
Every kilometre in Asaba, you are assaulted with checkpoint.
The police search people phones and bags.
Some even search the petticoats of ladies.
The bottom line is to illegally take money from innocent citizens.
The police give the impression that they are not paid monthly salary.
But the concern of this page is vehicles with tinted glasses.
A high court in Warri ruled within the week that the police and vehicles owners should maintain status quo.
Translation , vehicles with tinted glasses should not be disturbed.
But police in Asaba would hear none of that.
The Okpanam road stretch near the State Police headquarters became a traffic nightmare.
Police were searching vehicles in defiance of the court ruling.
Agreed that some of the owners of vehicles with tinted glasses use them for criminal activities.
But the larger picture of insecurity in the state dwarf the menace of tinted glasses.
This should be the concern of the police .

Age verification or death sentence

Civil servants are facing hard times in Delta state at hands of the Head of Service.
Time was when the office of Head of service issued a controversial memo of dress code.
Some of the highlights were the banning of eyelashes, coloured hair and fixing of nails for the ladies.
The men were warned not to wear beards, no resource control cap and Papa cap.
But these are more skin rashes compared to the cancer of screening.
In the wisdom of the government, you must finish primary school at the age of 12.
Nothing wrong with that.
What is wrong is the way and manner the verification team is going about the duty.
There is clear hatred and vendetta written on the faces of the members of the team.
Reports reaching The Pond News say that a teacher died because of the exercise and more civil servants are in hospitals suffering from high blood pressure and stroke.
Yet this is a government that claims to have the welfare of people at heart aka MORE Agenda.
People are forced into retirement in the most crude and inhumane manner.
Those who retired wait for eternity before getting their pension benefits.
This is certainly how not to treat civil servants that oil the engine of government.

DESOPADEC, conduit pipe for politicians

The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) was set up as an interventionist organ to address the economic and social needs of the oil bearing communities.
It is part of the derivation funds.
It was meant to compliment the developmental efforts of the government.
It was not meant to replace government .
The appointees of DESOPADEC are cronies of the governor.
In simple English, they are meant to carry out the instructions of the governor.
That explained the spat between late Chief E K Clark and Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.
That brought EFCC into the picture to investigate trillions of Naira meant for the agency.
Since the defection of Okowa to APC, the EFCC is pretending that the alleged misappropriation of the derivation funds no longer count.
That is a story for another day.
The old story of misappropriation of funds akin to larceny is going in DESOPADEC.
Within the week, the body organized youth seminar. Time was when the body claimed that clearing of drains was achievement.
Not too correct and very far from the mandate of DESOPADEC.
Build roads, build health centres, provide water and light for the people.
Go to the communities and ask them what they want.
Stop imposing projects on the people.
Stop producing millionaires and fat political cats close to government.
The oil bearing communities are aware of the docile attitude of the body.
Justify the presence of the body by peaking the living standards of the people.
