Delta Notes

Warri Journalists example

Yesterday , a befitting and state of the art edifice was donated to the Warri correspondents chapel of NUJ.

Once again Tompolo and Tantita have demonstrated their social responsibility to the people of Niger Delta in general and journalists in particular.

The Pond News salutes the leadership and members of Warri for their drive, foresight and thinking outside the box.

They have demonstrated in deed and in truth that journalists are strategic stakeholders in the Nigerian project who belong to the intellectual cream of the society.

But beyond the clinking of glasses,, this should be a civic lesson to the Delta State council of NUJ.

It is unfortunate that the tail (Warri) is wagging the dog (Delta state council.)

The state chairman and his exco should learn the principles of collective leadership instead of sideling some journalists under the veneer of stakeholders.

There are legions of such untidy disposition, the latest is the visit to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The result of the ‘kola’ left a sour taste in the mouth.

That leadership is not for self and cronies.

Asaba Floods and Road Master

This week Monday rains in Asaba, the Delta State capital proved the lies behind the name of Roadmaster given to Senator Ifeanyi Okowa,
the former governor.

The heavens opened and from Police headquarters to ShopRite, Okpanam road was flooded and many cars and keke were marooned.

All the millions of Naira spent during Okowa administration were washed down the drains.

Those who coined the name ‘Roadmaster’ for the governor should apologise to the residents of Asaba especially those living in Okpanam road.

The floods also invaded the Commissioners’ quarters, a reminder of the saying that the rich also cry.

Constructing effective drainage system is not rocket science.

Visit Onitsha and you see effective drainage system.

The one of Asaba could be easier because of the natural drainage system and closeness to the River Niger.

The tragedy of Delta State is that plagued by leaders whose sense of patriotism is not deep as my breast pocket.

Maybe the MORE agenda of Oborevwori administration should correct the lapses of the Okowa era.

Wastage and hiring of financial consultants

Within the week, the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori sent an unusual letter to the State House of Assembly.

The letter requested the permission of the House for the hiring of financial consultants and cynical smile played on the face.

Here is a state with Commissioner for Finance, Commissioner for Economic Planning, and Special Economic Adviser to the governor.

There is also the auditor general.

And from time to time, firm of external auditors look at the state financial records.

Yet the state has acquired the unique but dubious distinction of financial wastage.

This is certainly not the trademark of responsible and transparent governance.

This kind of wastage defies logic and is beyond explanations.

It is really unfortunate that committed leadership that has the interest of the people at heart is in short supply in Delta state.

A sad tale of waste.
