Asaba Street Children

A social plague is growing in Asaba few metres from the state secretariat and
Government House.
Yet those Commissioners and other top government officials are just dissembling as if everything were alright.

It is also close to the State House of Assembly where laws are made for the state.

Along the Okpanam Road, the famous Mariam Babaginda Road junction are children with brushes and soap.

Once the traffic light stops vehicles on the busy roads, these innocent children some as young as ten years would approach the motorists with their wares in order to clean the cars’ windscreen.

Some kind hearted motorists would part with some money. The danger is that these innocent children could be knocked down.

You may blame the parents for allowing them to venture into this risky business of begging. There is poverty in the land but the government should be blamed for its indifferent to the plights of these Deltans.

Headless Sports Commission

In one of our earlier reports on this column, we drew the attention to the huge refuse dump that is growing at the famous Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba.

It is the headquarters of Delta State Sports Commission.

Today a greater danger is facing the commission; the absence of chairman. Since the exit of Tonibok Okowa, younger brother to the former governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is still finding difficult to find a replacement.

The Sports Commission is notorious for having relatives of state governors as the head spanning from Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan to Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

There is still media speculation that Oborevwori is on the verge of appointing his relative as the head. The governor should please himself and appoint anybody.

Our major concern here is that the Delta State Sports Commission should have a chairman.

This column is not distracted by the power play between the former governor and the present governor. The sports Commission is indeed a gold mine and a governor would want his trusted ally to run the place.

Hunger Protest

Some Nigerians have indicated interest to participate in the August 1 hunger protest. It is meant to pass message to the Tinubu administration of the poverty and hunger in the country.

But here in Delta State, some youths after getting few crumbs from government said they were not interested in the proposed national wide protest.

Some Urhobo youths and Delta State students vowed their opposition to the protest.

These youths are passing unfortunate message that the poverty and hunger do not affect them.

This is a fatal mistake. The problem of this country is that youths are easily manipulated for bad course.

The Urhobo youths and Delta State students are threading the path of infamy because of the few Naira notes dangled before them.
