CROSS FIRE. Soludo , Obi haul insults over tenure

Former Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi has fired back at Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo over remarks suggesting that any politician promising a single term in office should undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Soludo made the controversial statement over the weekend, indirectly targeting Obi, who has consistently pledged to serve only one term—four years—if elected President in 2027.

In a detailed response today ,Obi stood by his promise, stating that impactful leadership does not require extended time in office.

He cited historical examples like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, who left lasting legacies despite serving relatively short terms.

“History shows that the longer many African leaders remain in power, the more likely they are to be corrupted by it,” Obi said. “Longevity is not a measure of success purposeful, accountable service is.”

Obi stressed that his promise was a solemn commitment, not a campaign gimmick. He acknowledged the growing public mistrust in politicians but insisted that his record of service in Anambra State proves his credibility.

“Some have suggested that I need a psychiatric evaluation for making such a promise. But I say: if our Constitution allows for a four year term, why should a leader be ridiculed for choosing to honor it?”

Highlighting his governance track record, Obi pointed to improvements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and prudent financial management during his time as Governor.

He reaffirmed that if elected President, he would not seek re-election after four years and laid out a focused agenda that includes:

Strengthening governance and tackling corruption; Addressing insecurity through strategic use of national resources; Boosting education, healthcare, and poverty reduction; Supporting small businesses to drive economic growth and Shifting Nigeria from a consumption based economy to a productive one driven by agriculture, technology, and manufacturing.

“These goals are realistic and achievable within four years. Leadership should be impactful, not eternal,” Obi concluded. “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
