Citizens decry indiscrimate dumping of waste

Residents of the Direct Labour Agency Road, Asaba in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State have lamented the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the area.

A resident, who simply identified himself as Akachukwu, said “it is now a norm for some unknown residents to dump their refuse along the streets during the night.”

Akachukwu disclosed that “it is not only the people in the area that are involved in this crime, but some people from other areas also move their waste at night to dump in the area as well.”

He described the act as wickedness and ungodly that must be stopped.

Mrs. Abraham Ngozi, a resident, said that the perpetrators were those not patronising waste collectors.

She called on the appropriate authorities to device means bringing the perpetrators to book and stop the unwholesome development.

Mrs Ngozi reiterated that it was absurd for someone to wake up in the morning to discover heeps of dirt in ones surroundings and called on all residents to register with waste collectors to avoid indiscreminate dumping of refuse.

Mr. Okolo Israel asserted that the waste collectors are to blame, stating that their exorbitant collection rate was responsible for perpetrators to seek shortcuts to dispose their waste.

He appealed to the state government to come to their aid by finding a solution to the menace, explaining that refuse not only defaced the area, but also serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and posing health hazard in the area.
