At least two persons have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries following a fireworks explosion at a Christmas carnival in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, December 28, during the peak of the celebration, when a high-intensity firework, commonly referred to as a “knockout,” suddenly exploded near the main stage of the event.
Eyewitnesses said the blast caused panic as attendees scrambled for safety. One of the victims, identified simply as Ugochi, was said to have died instantly, while another victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to injuries.
An eyewitness described the explosion as extremely loud, saying it went off “like a bomb,” causing people closest to the stage to collapse. The scene quickly became chaotic as screams filled the air and attendees fled the venue in different directions.
Children were reportedly among those affected, with several sustaining burns to the face and other parts of their bodies. A teenage girl, estimated to be about 14 years old, was said to have suffered serious injuries to her neck.
Videos circulating on social media captured moments after the explosion, showing thick smoke, confusion, and injured persons being hurried away for medical attention.
A family member of Ugochi confirmed her death in a voice message shared with journalists, explaining that she had returned to Umuchu for the Christmas holidays and was dancing at the carnival when the explosion occurred.
Sources revealed that the fireworks used at the event were stored in cartons and designed to discharge multiple explosive rounds, which reportedly worsened the impact of the blast.
Efforts to get a response from the Anambra State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.
