Strong indications emerged today that the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria Mr Godwin Emefiele is ignoring last week supreme Court ruling on the use of old Naira notes.
At the time of writing this story, neither the CBN governor has issued a circular nor any statement from the legal department of the CBN.
The silence of CBN on the old Naira notes has made many people not to accept the old Naira notes in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
It would be recalled that last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that old denominations of five
hundred Naira and one thousand Naira should remain legal tenders till 31st of December, 2023.
At the height of Naira notes scarcity, the President Muhammadu Buhari in a national broadcast told Nigerians to continue to use the old two hundred Naira notes till April 10, 2023.
The Pond News understands that these conflicting orders from the judiciary and the executive arm of government has left many Nigerians confused.
When The Pond News visited the famous Ogbogonogo market today, traders refused to accept the old denominations of five hundred Naira and one thousand Naira notes.
Some of the traders told The Pond News that unless the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria speaks on the matter, they would never accept the old Naira notes.
A trader who identified himself as Paul said that the CBN governor and president Muhammadu Buhari should be blamed for what is happening.
Paul asked :Is the CBN governor not aware of the Supreme Court ruling? Why is he not speaking on the matter? What is the president doing about the Supreme Court ruling?
A petty trader who refused to give her name said both CBN governor and Buhari are very wicked.
She said the two men are happy because Nigerians cannot get their own money because of currency redesign.
She cursed government officials who could not provide social services and still went ahead to deprive Nigerians of their own hard earned money.
The Pond News understands that most petrol stations in Asaba are also rejecting the old Naira notes.
Along the Nnebisi Road ,Asaba where most banks are situated, an ugly sea of Nigerians struggling to get their own money from the banks is the picture.
The Pond News understands that the Naira redesign policy is the greatest advertisement of inefficient and insensitive government in Nigeria.
The Pond News understands that the major cause of the Naira scarcity is CBN withdrawing N2.1 trillion from circulation and replacing it with N500 bn of new notes.
